I’ve been a longtime member of the Writers’Community of Durham Region, but since the meetings are held at Durham College, an hour away from home, I seldom attend. I read the announcements and follow along on Facebook, though, in awe at all the talented creative folks.

But on April 18th, I received this email from Dawn, the WCDR Treasurer:

Hi Hyacinthe,

Congratulations!

I am thrilled to announce that the WCDR is awarding you the $250 Len Cullen Scholarship!

The 2018 WCDR Grants & Scholarships will be awarded this Saturday at the Monthly Network Meeting.

To say I was thrilled would be an understatement! I’d entered the writing contest for the Grants in February and honestly, I’d forgotten about it. Am I grateful? Absolutely.

With the scholarship I won, I plan to attend a week-long writing retreat at Pelee Island Book House (http://www.peleeislandwriting.com/retreats.php), hopefully in the fall.

I have my second novel to work on, plus my 10 years and counting disorganized 400-page manuscript for my non-fiction book based on interviews with over seventy officers. What heaven it will be – seven days with no laundry to do, no meals to shop for/plan/cook/clean up after, no beds to make. I can’t wait to have an extended chunk of quiet time to myself.

I’ll be posting the entry – The Lake Decision – later this week.
